PAPANAHOA STREAM BRIDGE

Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii

State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation, Highways Division

Papanahoa Stream Bridge is a single span reinforced concrete precast solid  plank bridge located on the north coastline of the island Maui.  This single span structure is approximately 24’-3” in length and 16’-10” in length.  The substructure consists of concrete rubble masonry walls with a concrete cap.  There are no as-built record drawings of this bridge on file.

KSF, Inc. (KSF) conducted a survey and scan of the bridge to confirm size, composition and configuration of data depicted on sketches provided by the Hawaii Department of Transporation.  Non-destructive scans, which verified  the size and spacing of the reinforcing steel in the concrete, were performed with the Hilti PS1000 X-Scanner and PS200 Ferroscanner.   KSF then load rated  Papanahoa Stream Bridge with the information obtained through the survey and scan.  MIDAS Civil was used to conduct the finite element model of the structure.    KSF also provided the Hawaii Department of Transportation an equivalent BRASS Girder model.  In order to increase the capacity and the rating factor of the bridge, KSF recommended strengthening the structure with externally bonded carbon fiber reinforcing polymer.
